about

London-based, producer, singer and avant-pop auteur TONY NJOKU releases ‘100% 4 BEAUTY’, the initial offering from upcoming EP ‘JUSTINE’.

This is the British-Nigerian artist’s first release since late-2019’s ‘YOUR PSYCHE’S RAINBOW PANORMA’, which gained the support of Gilles Peterson (and played We Out Here’s first year – 2019), Tom Ravenscroft, Huw Stephens, Jamz Supernova and more.

Part of the fabric of South London’s exonerated music scene through being a component of the Slow Dance collective (who gave an early platform to bands like Black Midi and Sorry) but first and foremost as a musician himself, Tony has shared stages with Anna Von Hausswolff, Rival Consoles, Goat Girl, Gaika, Jacques, Ider, Kokoko!, PVA and Squid. He’s also been recognised by both Cate Le Bon and Shame, earning a spot on their curated line-up for Sonic City 2019.

Over the last few years, with a catalogue of acclaimed albums published, Tony Njoku has never looked to pigeonhole his sound in any way. This has led him down dark and haunting tunnels of self-discovery, from which he’s emerged with an ableness to articulate quaking spectrums of emotion through songwriting and performance.

On new single ‘100% 4 BEAUTY’, Tony unearths his self-proclaimed flaws. He administers a dose of a writhing time-signature, and lyrically bares insecurities and lack of self-worth.

Straddling neo-soul and crippling quarter-life crisis trip-hop, he says, “This is a song about my dedication to self-examination and self-discovery. Unearthing some of my flaws and inner turmoil (lack of courage, low self-esteem, etc), and discovering what gets me going despite that turmoil.
It’s an ode to beauty, to finding your ‘why’.

lyrics

My Lack of courage has cost me dearly.
And my low self worth has held me back.
I’m left asking what is all this for?
An existential weigh in.

I plead for peace in the fight in me,
but there seems to be no ending.
I sing and dream and dance to breathe,
And it’s all because of beauty.

Of beauty, of lightness.

I will no longer live in the darkness
Of yester depressions and false disappointments.

I’ll put all my love in art and beauty.
So my tears of Joy will turn to Bragolin.

My curse as your salvation.

Beauty’s my salvation,
Beauty’s my conviction,
And beauty’s my protection
